A group, Worried Nigerian Citizens, has opposed the appointment of Shaakaa Chira as the substantive Auditor-General of the Federation.

President Bola Tinubu, on October 20, approved the appointment of Chira as the substantive Auditor-General of the Federation, as recommended by the Federal Civil Service Commission.

A statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said, “By powers vested in him by Section 86 of the 1999 Constitution (Amended), the President approved Mr Chira’s appointment after the Federal Civil Service Commission conducted a screening exercise that identified Mr Chira as the most qualified candidate who had also scored the highest in the examination among all qualified candidates for the office.”

However, his appointment had been objected over concerns about his qualifications and experience, according to the group.

In the WNC petition signed by the Convener, Moses Idika, which was titled ‘President Bola Tinubu should revisit the appointment of Mr Shaaka Chira as the Auditor General of the Federation in the interest of Nigeria Civil Service,’ WNC expressed shock that Chira who was the most junior director in the AGoF was appointed to lead his superiors.

Calling on the President to reverse the appointment because it was not in consonance with civil service rule, WNC said, Chira’s appointment was capable of dampening “The morale of civil servants who work hard work and at the same time, make the lazy ones feel that they can attain the zenith of their career once they have ‘long legs’ within the government.
