The fight took place on the 13th of July, 1963 at the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan. It was at this battle for greatness that Dick Tiger demolished Gene Fullmer and retain his world middleweight title.

It was the biggest day in Nigeria’s boxing history and Dick Tiger showed greatness in front of over 35,000 fans (Nigerians and Foreigners).

After a seven round bout Dick brought the American boxer who had stood tooth to tooth with the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson to his knees.

Daily Trust Report, Date: 10th of August 1963

After retiring from boxing, Tiger worked as a guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. One day, he felt a strong pain in his back. Tested by doctors, he was diagnosed with liver cancer.

He had been banned by the Nigerian government because of his involvement in the Biafran Civil War; however, the ban was lifted immediately after news about his condition arrived in Nigeria.

He died of liver cancer on 14 December 1971 in Aba, Nigeria, at the age of 42.
