The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by its Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, who also served as a member of the APC Campaign Council during the 2023 elections, the Forum equally lauded the National Council of State for approving Amupitan’s appointment.
The Forum expressed confidence that Amupitan would deliver credible, transparent, and fair elections throughout his tenure as head of Nigeria’s electoral body.
Comprising key APC stakeholders from the North-Central region, the Forum thanked President Tinubu for entrusting such a sensitive national assignment to one of the region’s eminent sons.
“The North-Central APC Forum has welcomed with pride the appointment of one of our illustrious sons, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This development is a testament to the quality of human resources in the North-Central, which continue to play critical roles in national development,” the statement read.
The group described Amupitan as a seasoned legal scholar, accomplished academic, and experienced administrator with the competence and integrity required for the position.
“Having followed Professor Amupitan’s career over the years, particularly his distinguished service at the University of Jos, where he has taught and mentored generations of lawyers and academics for over three decades, we are confident he will uphold the highest standards of fairness and professionalism in Nigeria’s electoral process,” the forum stated.
The Forum further urged Nigerians and all stakeholders in the electoral system to support Amupitan to ensure his success in the crucial national assignment.
Professor Amupitan, who hails from Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria, was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in September 2014 after decades of service in the legal and academic fields.
At the University of Jos (UNIJOS), he has held several leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008–2014), Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (2012–2014), and Head of the Department of Public Law (2006–2008). Until his appointment, he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university.
Beyond UNIJOS, Professor Amupitan also serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State.
