5 Solo albums that succeeded without guest features

Date:

In an interview with Cool FM, Nigerian artist Adekunle Kosoko, professionally known as Adekunle Gold, explained why he didn’t announce the features on his Fuji-inspired album before its release.

According to him, he wanted listeners to anticipate the project for its sound, not just for the big names on it. “When I released my first album, I had only one feature, and it was one of my greatest works,” he said.

While collaborations have become the lifeblood of the music industry, some artists have dared to go solo, creating full-length albums with no guest appearances, relying solely on their talent and artistry.

Here are five times artists dropped albums without any features and still did well

1. Fireboy DML – Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps(2019)
The YBNL star’s debut album had zero features. Fireboy said he wanted listeners to experience his artistry without distractions, and it worked. The album produced timeless hits like Jealous and Vibration, cementing his place in Afrobeats.

2. Brymo – Oṣó (2018)
Alternative singer Brymo took a bold step by going solo on Oṣó, an album that showcased his poetic depth and distinctive sound. With songs like Heya! and God Is in Your Mind, it became a classic without a single feature.

3. Omah Lay – Boy Alone (2022)
The original version of Boy Alone had no guest artists, just Omah Lay’s raw emotions and introspective songwriting. The album resonated deeply with fans, proving he could carry an entire project alone.

4. J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014)
One of the most successful hip-hop albums ever made without features. J. Cole’s storytelling and production carried the entire project, earning him critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination.

5. Taylor Swift – Speak Now (2010)
At just 20, Taylor wrote every song and included no features. A rare move for a pop album. Speak Now became a global success, showing that pure songwriting and authenticity can still rule the charts.

In an era obsessed with collaborations, these artists proved that sometimes, less is more
